An Analysis of the Fourth Year Students’ Ability of English Department at Bung Hatta University in Translating “Job Vacancy Text” from English into Indonesian

Abstract

This research was to describe the fourth year students’ ability of English Department of Bung Hatta University in translating job vacancy text from English into Indonesian in terms of lexical equivalence and grammatical adjustment. The population of this research was the fourth year English Department students that comprised 126 students. For choosing the sample, the researcher used simple random sampling technique. The instrument was translation test. After  analyzing the data, the researcher found that in average, 18 students (72%) who had moderate ability in translating an job vacancy text from English into Indonesian. Specifically, 17 students (68%) who had moderate ability in terms of lexical equivalence and 18 students (72%) who had moderate ability in terms of grammatical adjustment. Based on this study, , the researcher suggests the students to improve their ability in translating especially in terms of lexical equivalence and grammatical adjustment by doing more exercises and practicing translation. It is expected that the lecturers give the students more exercises to improve their vocabulary mastery and to add their knowledge about translation, especially about translating job vacancy text. Translation lecturers also should develop their teaching materials to increase students’ ability in translating
