Summery

This research is motivated by the number of students’ who make mistakes in solving math story problems. For that we need to analyze about the types of errors that students do and describe the factors causing students to make mistakes. Error analysis based on Newman Procedure is one simple method that can be used to diagnose mistakes in solving mathematical problems.

The purpose of this research is: 1) To know the stages of mistakes made by grade VIII SMP Kartika 1-7 Padang in solving the problem of mathematical stories based on Newman procedures, 2) To know the factors that cause students of class VIII SMP Kartika 1- 7 Padang made a mistake in solving a mathematical story based on Newman's procedure.

The type of this research is descriptive research and using qualitative research method. The study population is all students of class VIII SMP Kartika 1-7 Padang. The sample of this research is the students of class VIII1, VIII2, VIII3 which amounted to 56 people. Research instruments are test and interview.

The results of this study indicate the mistakes made by students with a sample of 56 students. Students read or decoding error 25%, Comprehension error 80,36%, Transformation Error 91,07%, Process Skill error 98 , 21%, and 100% final encryption error (Encoding error). Factors that cause students to make mistakes are as follows: 1) Students are not able to distinguish one object from another, 2) Students are unable to identify the core sentence so that the desired matter is missed, 3) unable to continue the algorithm to solve the problem, 3) Students are not able to know the right units to use.

From the results of the study it is advisable that students should familiarize themselves to write down what is known and asked by the problem by using the context of the problem of the story, reproducing the exercise questions and getting used to check the answers before being collected, and getting used to writing the conclusions of each question completely. In addition, teachers should be more mengaitkan learning materials with daily life so easy to understand and remember.
