Abstract

This study aims to improve the learning process and result of students in natural science subject (IPA) subject using active learning tournament technique, conducted in 4th class of elementary school 18 Batang Anai, Padang Pariaman. Robert Slavin’s natural science and active learning tournament technique theories underlay this research. By using classroom action research design, this study was done through some steps: (1) Planning, (2) Acting, (3) Developing, and (4) Reflecting. The object in this study was a group of 23 of year 4 students of Elementary school 18, Batang Anai, Padang Pariaman.Data collection was analyzed by mix technique, qualitatively and quantitatively. Observation sheet of students learning activity, observation sheet of teachers teaching process and students test result were used as instruments. Finding of this study reveals average percentage of students learning activity, at which 68.4% gained from cycle I and cycle II had average about 84.5%. Hence, there was an increasing of 16.1% of students learning activity process. In addition, the average of students test result also showed improvement, from 73% in cycle I to 80.9% in cycle II, recording 7.9% of growth. To conclude, implementing active learning technique tournament in natural science subject learning process is likely to improve students’ activity and result. This study suggests teachers to utilize correct approach, method, technique and strategy that suit to learning materials. Besides, while applying active learning technique tournament, teachers are expected to put more attention to students’ group discussion and manage teaching time properly in order the process of teaching and learning run well.
