Defamation is regulated in Law Number 19 of 2016 concerning Electronic Information

and Transactions. For example in the case of defamation carried out by the Regent of

Solok Epyardi Asda against the Chairman of the DPRD Dodi Hendra on July 2, 2021.

Problem formulation (1) What is the role of investigators from the Special Criminal

Investigation Directorate of the West Sumatra Regional Police in handling criminal acts

of defamation on social media ? (2) What are the obstacles faced by investigators of the

Special Criminal Investigation Directorate of the West Sumatra Regional Police in

handling criminal acts of defamation on social media? This research uses sociological

juridical research. Data were collected with primary and secondary data. The data

collected qualitatively. Conclusions from the research (1) The role of the Special

Criminal Investigation investigator of the West Sumatra Regional Police to analyze

several collections of evidence and until it can be decided that the WhatsApp account is

proven to have committed a criminal act. (2) Obstacles faced by investigators in handling

defamation cases include the shortage of investigators specializing in cyber crimes and

difficulties in finding perpetrators of fake accounts.
