Abstract

ABSTRACT The Marriage Law states that courts can grant permission to a husband to have more than one wife if desired by the parties concerned. Problem formulation (1) What are the factors causing the marriage of a husband with more than one wife in the Class IA Religious Court in Padang City? (2) What is the effect of a marriage of a husband and wife more than one person in the Class IA Religious Court in Padang City? The type of research used is sociological juridical; the data source used is primary data; data collection techniques using semi-structured interviews and document studies; and analyzed qualitatively. The results of the study that: (1) The factors causing the marriage of a husband with more than one wife in the Class IA Religious Court of Padang City whose application for permission is granted are to practice worship, self-will, avoid slander and help widows from distress. (2) The effect of the marriage of a husband with more than one wife in the Class IA Religious Court of Padang City whose application for permission is granted, namely the division of rights owned by the first wife and children before the husband or father remarries.
