Abstract

ABSTRACT

 

The combat drones in the Russia-Ukraine armed conflict has been regulated within the principles of International Humanitarian Law. Considering the rapid development of military technology, particularly Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), it has transformed the character of modern warfare by enabling highly precise long-range attacks and reducing risks to military personnel during hostilities. However, their use raises complex legal issues regarding responsibility in relation to IHL principles such as the Distinction Principle, the Military Necessity Principle, the Chivalry Principle, and the Humanity Principle. Problems in this study are formulated as follows: (1) How international law regulate the use of combat drones in international armed conflicts? (2) What the juridical analysis of the use of combat drones in the Russia-Ukraine war based on the principles of IHL? Research employs a normative juridical approach. Study secondary data sources consisting of primary legal materials such as international treaties and customary IL, secondary legal materials including scholarly articles and reports of international organizations, a tertiary legal materials such a legal. Data collection was conducted through document study; subsequently, the data were systematically presented & analyzed qualitatively. The conclusions of this study are: (1) The use of combat drones in international armed conflicts is permissible as long as it complies with the principles of IHL. (2) The Take of combat drones in the Russia-Ukraine war contradicts IHL principles due to attacks on public facilities and civilians whose protection is regulated in the Geneva Convention IV & Additional Protocol I 1977. Due to the misuse of this weapon of war, it is appropriate that Russia and Ukraine be brought before (ICJ).
