Abstract

ABSTRACT

Marriage is a legally binding event between a woman and a man religiously and nationally. Marriage in Indonesia has diversity which is influenced by religious values, norms and values of the kinship system that develops in society, one of which is the bajapuik tradition. The bajapuik tradition is a term that only exists and is always attached to the typical Pariaman marriage procession. Bajapuik is seen as an obligation of the woman's family to pay her future husband, known as japuik money, in an amount adjusted to the social status she holds. The formulation of the problem in this study is 1) How is the implementation of the bajapuik tradition in marriage in Pariaman City, 2) What is the impact of the bajapuik tradition on marriage in Pariaman City. The problem approach used in this study is Empirical Juridical, the nature of the research used is descriptive. The method used was by studying documents and interviews. Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that 1) The process of the stages of the traditional tradition of bajapuik and lost money has several differences in each region sampled. Because each region has its own thoughts about the traditional traditions of Bajapuik and money is lost, but the differences in each region are not too significant. 2) The influence felt on the tradition of bajapuik money gives an assumption to the surrounding community regarding the response to the bride and groom.
