AN ANALYSIS OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN DETERMINING SUBJECT, PREDICATE, AND COORDINATING CONJUNCTION IN COMPOUND SENTENCE AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to find out students’ ability in determining subject, predicate, and coordinating conjunction in compound sentence. The design of this research was descriptive. The total sample members were 30 students, and they were chosen by using total sampling technique. The result of this research showed that the students’ ability at English Department of Bung Hatta University in determining subject, predicate, and coordinating conjunction in compound sentence in general was low. It was proved that 46.7 % students had low category. Furthermore, students’ ability in determining subject in compound sentence was low. It was proved that 60 % students had low category. Then, students’ ability in determining predicate was low. It was proved that 70 % students had low category; students’ ability in determining coordinating conjunction in compound sentence was very good. It was proved that 86.7 % students had very good category. Related to the findings, the researcher gives suggestions for the lecturers, students, and the next researchers. The lecturers need to improve students’ ability in determining subject and predicate in compound sentence. The students should do more exercises about how to determine subject and predicate in compound sentence. The last, the researcher suggests other researchers to study about factors made students unable to determine subject and predicate in compound sentence.
