AN ANALYSIS OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO WRITE COMPOUND SENTENCES AT THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the second year students’ ability in writing  compound sentences at the English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was 30 students. The sample was chosen by using total sampling technique. In collecting data, the researcher used writing sentence test. The coefficient correlation of the test was 0.99; therefore,the test was considered reliable. The result of this research showed that the second year students’ ability in writing compound sentences in general was low. It was proved by 9 students (30%) had very good ability, 6 students (20%) had good ability, 2 students (6.7%) had moderate ability and 13 students (43.3%) had low ability. In detail, the percentages of each aspect in writing compound sentences test were 43.3% students had low ability in writing the first independent clause, 43.3% students had low ability in writing the second independent clause, 43.3% students had low ability in using coordinate conjunction, 50% students had low ability in using mechanics. The students’ did not understand how to use correct grammar in the first and second independent clause of compound sentences. They also did not understand about the meaning of each coordinate conjunction and how to use mechaniscs to write compound sentences. Based on the result of the research, English teachers are suggested to find the strategies to make students easier to understand compound sentences and motivate them to study  hard. The students are expected to learn more and do more exercises on writing compound sentences.
