AN ANALYSIS OF THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO WRITE PROCEDURE TEXT BASED ON PICTURE SERIES AT SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 12 PADANG

Abstract 

The purpose of this research was to describe the tenth grade students’ ability to write procedure text based on picture series at Senior High School 12 Padang. The population of this research was the tenth grade students of Senior High School 12 Padang. To select the sample the researcher used stratified cluster random sampling technique and the total number of sample was sixty two (62) students. They consisted of 31students from X.IA.2 and 31students from X.IS.1.The data were collected through a writing test. The researcher used inter-rater technique to know the reliability of test. The reliability coefficient of the test was 0.69. The result of this research showed that in general the tenth grade students’ ability at Senior High School 12 Padang in writing procedure text based on picture series was high. It could be seen that 58.1% students had high ability. In detail, the students’ ability to organize the generic structures was high. It was proved that 69% students had high ability. The students’ ability to apply language features was low. It was proved that 89% students had low ability. The students’ ability to use appropriate vocabulary was low. It was proved that 85.49% students had low ability. The students’ ability to apply mechanics was low. It was proved that 83.9% students had low ability. Based on the result of the research, English teachers are suggested togive emphasis to teaching activity and to give more exercises.
