A CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY AND THEIR GRAMMAR MASTERY TOWARD THEIR ABILITY TO WRITE AN EXPOSITORY PARAGRAPH OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

This research was aimed to find out the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their grammar mastery toward their ability to write an expository paragraph of the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The number of population was 29 students. The researcher took the sample by using total sampling technique. To analyze the data the researcher used the Pearson Product Moment Formula and Double Correlation Formula. Students’ vocabulary mastery of the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University was moderate (58.62%), their grammar mastery was moderate (69%), and their writing ability was moderate (58.6%).For the coefficient correlation, first the value of coefficient correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their writing ability was positive (0.63> 0.381). Second, the value of coefficient correlation between students’ grammar mastery and their writing ability was positive (0.53>0.381). Third, the value of coefficient of correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their grammar mastery toward their ability to write expository paragraph was positive (11.56 > 3.37). α 0.05 and the degree of freedom (df) n-k-1 (26). It can be concluded that there was a significant correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their grammar mastery toward their ability to write an expository paragraph of the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University.
