AN ANALYSIS OF THE SECOND GRADE STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN WRITING ANALYTICAL EXPOSITION TEXT AT SMAN 1 PADANG SAGO

Abstrak

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research was to describe the second grade students’ ability in writing analytical exposition text at SMAN 1 Padang Sago. In writing analytical exposition text, students should consider 4 components. They are the ability in writing generic structure, applying language features, using the appropriate vocabulary, and applying mechanics. The population of this research was the second grade students at SMAN 1 Padang Sago. To select the sample the researcher used stratified cluster random sampling technique and the total number of sample were fifty one (51) students. The data were collected through a writing test. The researcher used inter-rater technique to know the reliability of test. The reliability coefficient of the test was 90. The result of this research showed that in general the second grade students’ ability at SMAN 1 Padang Sago in writing analytical exposition text was low. It could be seen that 70.6% students had low ability. In detail, the students’ ability to organize the generic structures was low. It was proved that 66.4% students had low ability. The students’ ability to apply language features was low. It was proved that 82.2% students had low ability. The student’ ability to use appropriate vocabulary was low. It was proved that 74.5% students had low ability. The students’ ability to apply mechanics was low. It was proved that 60.8% students had low ability. Based on the result of the research, English teachers are suggested to give more exercises and explanation more about analytical exposition text. For students are expected to learn more about analytical exposition, for the further researchers it is also suggested to find out the appropriate technique in teaching analytical exposition text.
