AN ANALYSIS OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO WRITE A DESCRIPTIVE PARAGRAPH AT THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract

This research was aimed to describe the second year students’ ability to write descriptive paragraph at the English Department of Bung Hatta University. This research is descriptive in nature. The population of this research was the second year students at the English Department of Bung Hatta University in academic year 2016/2017. The number of population was 30 students compounded in one class. In choosing the sample, researcher used total sampling technique so that the number of sample was 30 students. The instrument used to get the data was a writing test in the form of writing descriptive paragraph. The test was valid in terms of content validity, and its reliability index was .97. It means the test has high reliability.In general, results of data analysis revealed that 16 (53.33%) students had low ability in writing a descriptive paragraph. There are 19 (63.33%) students had low in writing topic sentence of a descriptive paragraph, 16 (53.33%) students had low ability in writing supporting sentences of a descriptive paragraph, 24 (80.00%) students had low ability in writing concluding sentence of a descriptive paragraph. Meanwhile, 22 (73.33%) students had good ability in using correct grammar in writing a descriptive paragraph, 18 (60.00%) students had good ability in using appropriate vocabulary in writing a descriptive paragraph, and 23 (76.67%) students had good ability in using correct mechanic in writing a descriptive paragraph.
