AN ANALYSIS OF THE SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO WRITE SIMPLE SENTENCE BY USING PICTURE AT SMPN 31 PADANG

Abstract

Purpose of this research was to describe the seventh grade students’ ability to write simple sentence by using picture at SMPN 31 Padang. Design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the seventh grade students at SMPN 31 Padang. The researcher used convenience sampling technique to select the samples. The total number of sample members was 56 distributed into two classes. In collecting data, the researcher used writing test. To find reliability in the test, the researcher used inter rater techniques by using two scorers. The correlation coeficient was 0.97. It means the test was reliable.Based on the result of data analysis, it was indicated that the seventh grade students’ ability to write simple sentence by using picture at SMPN 31 Padang in general was low. It was proved by the fact that 41.07% of them could write simple sentence by using picture (grammar, vocabulary and mechanics). There were 41.07% students classified into low ability in using grammar, 58.92% students classified into high ability in using appropriate vocabulary and 73.21% students classified into low ability in applying mechanics.Based on the result, the researcher gives suggestion to the English teacher to give more explanation and exercises about writing simple sentence by using picture. The students are suggested to learn more about writing simple sentence and do more exercises to improve their ability. The next researchers are suggested to use this research as a reference to conduct other relevant research.
