AN ANALYSIS OF SECOND YEAR STUDENTS’ DIFFICULTIES IN WRITING ARGUMENTATIVE PARAGRAPH AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract
This research was intended to find out the second year students’ difficulties in writing argumentative paragraph at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was 31 students of English Department in 2016/2017 academic year. The researcher used total sampling technique in taking the sample. It means the sample was all of the second year students; the students were grouped into one class. The members of population were taught by using the same curriculum, syllabus, material, and lecturer in writing subject.The result of this study showed that the students had difficulties in writing thesis statement, arguments, and concluding sentence, in choosing appropriate vocabulary, in using grammar, and in applying mechanics. In specific, the researcher found the lowest percentage of students who had difficulties were 4 (12.9%) of 31 students in writing thesis statement. There were 5 (16.12%) of 31 students had difficulties in writing arguments, there were 12 (40.32%) of 31 students had difficulties in writing concluding sentences, there were 14 (46.77%) of 31 students had difficulties in choosing appropriate vocabulary, there were 16 (51.61%) of 31 students had difficulties in using grammar, there were 21 (59.67%) of 31 students had difficulties in applying mechanics. Based on the result of the research, the lecturers are suggested to explain more about argumentative paragraph in order to minimize the students who had difficulties. The students are suggested to study harder and learn more about the thesis statement, arguments and concluding sentence of argumentative paragraph, and they should improve their knowledge about vocabulary, grammar and mechanics.
