Abstract
This research was aimed to find out the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and simple past tense mastery toward their ability to write news item text on grade X at SMA Negeri 4 Payakumbuh. The hypothesis of this research was that if there was a significant correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and simple past tense mastery toward their ability to write news item text on grade X at SMA Negeri 4 Payakumbuh. The number of population was 305 students. The researcher took two classes as sample by using cluster random sampling technique. The classes selected as sample were classes X1 and X8. The researcher gathered the data by using vocabulary test, simple past tense test and writing test. To analyze the data the researcher used the Person Product Moment Formula and Multiple Correlation Formula. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that the value of coefficient of three variables was .73 and f- counted was 15.39 (α 0.05) and the degree of freedom (df) n-k-1 (27), value of f- table was 3.32 (see Appendix 31). It means that f- counted (15.39) was bigger that f- table (3.32). Therefore, the relationship between three variables, vocabulary mastery, simple past tense mastery and ability in writing was significant. It means that the alternative hypothesis stating “there is a significant correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and simple past tense mastery toward their ability to write news item text on grade X at SMA Negeri 4 Payakumbuh” was accepted.
