THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING ENGLISH SONGS TO DEVELOP THE SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY AT SMPN 1 KECAMATAN PAYAKUMBUH

Purpose of this research is to find the effectiveness of using English song in teaching vocabulary. The design of the research was quasi experimental research. The total number of the members of population was 256 students and the number of sample was 56 consisting of 28 students as experimental group and 28 students as control group. The treatment was done for sixth meetings. In collecting the data, the researcher used vocabulary test. Before giving the post-test, the test was tried out to the students out of sample. The reliability of the test was 0.83 and it was categorized very high. The post-test was given after doing teaching process for sixth times. The data were analyzed by using t-test. The result of the analysis showed that t-calculated was 4.9. The value of t-table was 2.05 at the level of significance 0.05 and degree of freedom 54. It means that the value of t-calculated was higher than the value of t-table. Therefore, the research stating that there is a positive significant effect of using English songs to develop students’ vocabulary mastery at SMP N 1 Kecamatan Payakumbuh. The researcher concluded that the use of English songs gave a positive significant effect toward students’ vocabulary mastery. Relating this conclusion, the researcher suggested that the English teacher might consider to use English songs to develop students’ vocabulary mastery.
