AN ANALYSIS OF THE FIRST YEAR STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN WRITING IMAGINATIVE RECOUNT TEXT AT SMAN 7 PADANG

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to find outthe first year students’ ability in writing imaginative recount text at SMAN 7 Padang. The population of this research was the first year students at SMAN 7 Padang. To select the sample the researcher used stratified cluster random sampling technique and the total number of sample were sixty (60) students, 31 students from IPA and 29 students from IPS. The data were collected through a writing test. The researcher used inter-rater technique to know the reliability of test. The reliability coefficient of the test was 0.87. The result of this research showed that in general the first year students’ ability in writing imaginative recount text at SMAN 7 Padang was high. It could be seen that 73.3% students had high. In detail, the students’ ability to organize the generic structures was high. It was proved that 80% students had high. The students’ ability to apply language features was low. It was proved that 60% students had low. The student’ ability to use appropriate vocabulary was low. It was proved that 62% students had low. The students’ ability to use mechanics can be considered moderate. Because 50% students had highand 50% students had low. Based on the result of the research, English teachers are suggested to give more exercises and motivation to the students. The students are expected to learn more and to do more exercise in writing imaginative recount text.
