AN ANALYSIS OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS’ PROBLEMS IN PRONOUNCING HIGH VOWELS AT THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract
Purpose of this research is to describe the second year students’ problems in pronouncing high vowels at the English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research is descriptive in nature. Number of population is 30 students. The researcher used total sampling technique. The instrument used to get the data was oral test pronunciation . The researcher used interjudge reliability. It was found that the reliability index of the test in the form of pronouncing high vowels was very high (.98). It means that the instrument is reliable. Generally, result of the data analysis shows that 73.33% students had no problems in pronouncing high vowels. Specifically, half students (50%) had problems in pronouncing high vowel /i:/, Twenty eight students (93.33%) had no problems or good in pronouncing high vowel /i/. Eighteen students (60%) had problems or low in pronouncing high vowel /u:/. Twenty nine students (96.66%) had no problems or good in pronouncing high vowel /u/. Finally, based on the findings, it can be concluded that second year students’ of the English Department of Bung Hatta University don’t have serious problem in pronouncing some high vowels (/i:/, /u:/). Concerning two difficult high vowels /i:/ and /u:/, students are suggested to have more practices.
