AN ANALYSIS OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT BY USING WORKSHEET AT SMPN 27 PADANG

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to describe the students’ ability in writing descriptive text by using worksheet at SMPN 27 Padang. The population of this study was the second grade students at SMPN 27 Padang. The total members of population were 227 students. They were distributed into seven classes which consist of VIII 1, VIII 2, VIII 3, VIII 4, VIII 5, VIII 6, VIII 7. The researcher used cluster random sampling techniques to select the sample (VIII 1 and VIII 3), which consist of 60 students. The data of this study were gathered by using writing test on descriptive text. The result of data analysis showed that the students’ ability in writing a descriptive text by using worksheet at SMPN 27 Padang was moderate. It was proved by the fact that there is 1 student (2%) who had high ability, 50 students (83%) had moderate ability, and 9 students (15%) had low ability. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that ability of the second year students at SMPN 27 Padang was moderate. In line with this conclusion, the teachers are suggested to use worksheet in teaching descriptive text, and the students are suggested to learn and do more exercises in learning descriptivet text. Then the next researcher is suggested to do relevant research from different point of view and another kind of text.
