AN ANALYSIS OF SECOND YEAR STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY IN EXPRESSING AGREEMENT AND DISAGREEMENT AT SMPN 27 PADANG

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe students` speaking ability in expressing agreement and disagreement. In expressing agreement and disagreement we can ask someone to agree and disagree with our statement.  The population of this research was the second year students of SMPN 27 Padang. The number of population members in this study are 230 students and they were distributed into seven classes. Each class has 30 students. The total sample members were 60 students ( VIII1 and VIII3 ). They were chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected through speaking test. The result of this research showed that the students’ ability of SMPN 27 Padang in general was high. It was proved by the finding that 57% students had high ability. In specific, the second year students’ speaking ability at SMPN 27 Padang in expressing content was low. It was proved by finding that 79% students had low ability. The second year students’ ability in using grammar at SMPN 27 Padang was high. It was proved by finding that 68% students had high ability. The second year students` speaking ability in choosing vocabulary at SMPN 27 Padang was high. It was proved by finding that 100% students had high ability. The second year students` speaking ability in term of pronunciation was high. It was proved by finding that 80% students had high ability. The ability of the second year students` speaking in using expression of agreement and disagreement in term of fluency was low. It was proved by finding that 60% students had low ability. The researcher concluded that the ability of the second year students` speaking ability to use expression of agreement and disagreement was high. Dealing with the conclusion, English teachers are suggested to maintain students` ability and also improve it by giving more practices in expressing agreement and disagreemnt.
