AN ANALYSIS OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO WRITE A NARRATIVE PARAGRAPH AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the second year students’ ability to write a narrative paragraph at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research is descriptive design. The researcher used total sampling technique to select the sample.The total number of sample members was 30 students. The instrumentation of the research was writing test. After analyzing data, the result showed that the ability of the second year students to write a narrative paragraph was good, it is indicated that 13 students (43.33%) from 30 students had good ability. Specifically, students’ ability to write content of a narrative paragraph was very good (63.33%). Students’ ability to write topic sentence of a narrative paragraph was very good (76.67%). Students’ ability to write supporting sentences of a narrative paragraph was very good (60%). Students’ ability to write concluding sentence of a narrative paragraph was low (36.67%). Students’ ability to apply correct grammar in writing a narrative paragraph was low (66.67%). Students’ ability to use appropriate vocabulary in writing a narrative paragraph was good (46.67%). Students’ ability to use correct mechanics in writing a narrative paragraph was good (56.67%). Referring to the result of the research, the researcher suggests the lecturers to give more exercises and consider teaching strategies that can improve students’ ability. The researcher suggest the second year students to learn more about writing a narrative paragraph. For further researcher, the researcher suggest to find out the problems of the students to write a narrative paragraph.
