AN ANALYSIS OF THE THIRD YEAR STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN WRITING DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract

This research was aimed to describe the third year students’ ability in writing descriptive essay at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The number of population was 44 students compounded in two classes. In choosing the sample, researcher used total sampling technique so that the number of sample was 44 students. The instrument used to get the data was a writing test in the form of writing descriptive essay. The test was valid in terms of content validity, and its reliability index was .99. It means the test has high reliability. In general, results of data analysis revealed that 25 (56.82%) students had good ability in writing a descriptive essay. In detail, there were 16 students (36.36%) who had been classified into having bad ability in writing the content of descriptive essay, 27 students (61.36%) who had been classified into having good ability in applying the language features (grammar) in writing descriptive essay, 28 students (63.6%) who had been classified into having good ability in using the appropriate vocabulary in writing descriptive essay, and 33 students (75%) who had been classified into having good ability in applying the mechanics in writing descriptive essay.
