AN ANALYSIS OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO WRITE AN ARGUMENTATIVE PARAGRAPH AT THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract
Purpose of this research was to describe the second year students’ ability to write an argumentative paragraph at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was descriptive design. The population of this research was all of the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The researcher used total sampling technique to select the sample. The total number of sample members was 28. In collecting data, the researcher used writing paragraph test. The coefficient correlation was 0.91. It means the test was reliable. There were 20 students (71.43%) had bad ability, 5 students (17.86%) had good ability, 1 student (7.14%) had moderate ability and 1 student (3.57%) had bad ability. In specific, the students’ ability to write topic sentence was bad (67.86%), the students’ ability to write supporting sentences was also bad (75%), the students’ ability to write concluding sentence was bad (85.72%), the students’ ability to use correct grammar in was bad (50%), the students’ ability to use appropriate vocabulary was good (50%) and the students’ ability to use correct mechanics was bad (92.86%). Based on the result of data analysis, the researcher concludes that the second year students’ ability to write an argumentative paragraph in general was bad. Therefore, the researcher suggests that the lecturers should give more practice of several aspects of argumentative paragraph; topic sentence, supporting sentences, concluding sentence, grammar and mechanics in order that the students’ ability twill be improved. The students are also expected to learn more and do more exercises in writing an argumentative paragraph.
