ANANALYSIS OF THE FIRST GRADE STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY IN TELLING FUTURE PLANS AT SMA NEGERI 9 PADANG

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to describe the first grade students’ speaking ability in telling future plans at SMA Negeri 9 Padang. The design of this research was descriptive method. The population of this research was the first grade students at SMAN 9 Padang. The total population of this research was 280 students. The researcher used stratified cluster random sampling technique to select the sample. The total number of sample members was 58. The data were collected by using speaking test. The researcher asked students to tell their future plans in front of the class orally.The coefficient correlation of the test was 0,81. It means that the test is reliable. The students’ speaking in telling future plans was evaluated by considering five components of speaking. They were content, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and pronunciation.Generally, it is found that the student’s ability in telling future plans is moderate. It is proved that 84,48% students had moderate ability. In specific, student’s ability in expressing idea is moderate. It is indicated by the fact that 65,52% students had moderate ability.Student’s ability in using appropriate vocabulary is moderate. It is indicated by the fact that 95,55% students had moderate ability. Student’s ability in using correct grammaris moderate. It is indicated by the fact that75,86% students had moderate ability. Student’s ability in pronouncing wordsis moderate. It is indicated by the fact that 43,10% students had moderate ability. Student’s ability in fluency in telling future plans is moderate. It is indicated by the fact that 82,76% students had moderate ability.Based on the findings, the researcher concludes that the speaking ability of the first grade students in telling future plans was moderate. Relating to this conclusion, she suggests to English teachers to improve students’ability in telling future plans by giving more practices in telling future plans. For students, they have to do more practices in telling future plans.
