An Analysis of the First Grade Students’ Speaking Ability to Describe People at SMP Bunda Padang

Abstract

Aim of this study was to describe the students’ speaking ability to describe people. Related to this, the researcher used descriptive method. The population of this research was the first grade students at SMP Bunda Padang. Total Sample was 15 students. To get the sample, the researcher used total sampling technique. Number of population was 15 students. Data of this research were gathered by using speaking test in the form of an oral test. To find out the reliability of this test, the researcher used inter-rater technique. Result of the two scores was used to know the reliability of the test. It  was found that the reliability index of the test was high correlation 0.71. It means the test was reliable. Then the test was valid in terms of content validity. The result of this research showed that in general the ability of the first grade  students of SMP Bunda Padang to describe people was low. It was suported by the data that 93,33 % students had low ability. The students’ ability in expressing ideas (content) to describe people was high. It was proved by the fact that 10 students (67%); had high ability. The students’ ability in using appropriate grammar to describe people was low. It was proved by the fact that14 students (93,33%) had low ability. The students’ ability in using appropriate vocabulary to describe people was high. It was proved by the fact that 8 students (54%) had high ability. The students’ ability in pronuncing words to describe people was low. It was proved by the fact that 10 students (67%) had low ability. Then, the students’ ability in fluency to describe people was high. It was proved by the fact that 13 students (86,67%) had low ability. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that, the students’ speaking ability to describe people  was low ability. . Relating to this, the researcher suggested to the English teachers at SMP Bunda Padang to improve the students’ ability in describing people and  give more practices about describing people in speaking . For students, they are suggested to learn harder in speaking skill, and expected to do more practices  in order to increase their ability in describing people.
