AN ANALYSIS OF SECOND YEAR STUDENTS’ PROBLEMS IN WRITING PASSIVE VOICE AT THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract
Purpose of this research is to describe the second year students’ problems in writing passive voice at the English Department of Bung Hatta University. Design of this research was descriptive in nature. Numbers of population are 31 students. The researcher used total sampling technique. The instrument used to get the data was writing test. The researcher used interjudge reliability to find out reliability of the test. The coefficient correlation index of the test was .99. It means that the test is reliable. Based on the data analysis, it was found that 20 students (65%) had problem in writing passive voice. Specifically, 21 students (68%) had problem in writing passive voice in simple present tense, 17 students (55%) had problem in writing passive voice in present continuous tense, 18 students (58%) had problem in writing passive voice in simple past tense, 15 students (52%) had no problem in writing passive voice in past continuous tense, 16 students (52%) had problem in writing passive voice in present perfect tense, 18 students (58%) had problem in writing passive voice in present perfect continuous tense, 16 students (52%) had problem in writing passive voice in past perfect tense and 19 students (61%) had problem in writing passive voice in past perfect continuous tense. Finally, based on the findings, it can be concluded that the second year students have problems in writing passive voice. Based on the conclusion, for the students, it is suggested that second year students should learn more to write passive voice. And they practice a lot in writing passive voice, and for lecturer, it is suggested to give more explanations, more exercises and find the appropriate strategy in teaching writing passive voice.
