An Analysis of the Eighth Grade Students’ Ability to Write Notice at SMP Kartika 1-6 Padang

Abstract
Aim of the research is to describe eighth grade students’ ability in writing notice at SMP Kartika 1-6 Padang. The design of this research was descriptive. The number of population of this research was 109 in four classes. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique in taking the sample. The members of population were 28 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used writing test. In this test, the students write four sentences based on four pictures. To make the test reliable, the researcher tried out the test. It was found that the reliability index of the test was 0,85 (high) (see Appendix 5). It means the test was reliable. Then the test was valid in terms of content validity. In analyzing the data, the researcher presented the raw score, then counted the average score from two scorers, calculated the mean and standard deviations, classified the students who got high, moderate, or low ability and finally, calculated the percentage of the students whose ability was in each classification. From the result of the study, the researcher found that the ability of eighth grade students’ ability to write the notice at SMP Kartika 1-6 Padang was moderate. It was indicated by the percentage of students (71.43%) whose ability fell in this category. In detail, from point of content their ability in writing notice was moderate. It was indicated by the percentage of students (75%) whose ability fell in this category. Their ability to use the appropriate vocabulary in writing notice was moderate. It was indicated by the percentage of students (60.71%) whose ability fell in this category and their ability to use the correct mechanic was moderate. It was indicated by the percentage of students (57.14%) whose ability fell in this category. Since the result of the study showed that the students’ ability in writing notice was moderate, the researcher suggests the students to have more practices in writing notice. For English teacher at SMP Kartika 1-6 Padang, they should give more explanation and exercises in order to help the students to improve their ability in writing notice.
