AN ANALYSIS OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS’ SPEECH ABILITY AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the second grade students’ speech ability at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was descriptive method. The population of this research was the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The total population of this research was 31 students. The researcher used convenience sampling to select the sample. The total number of sample members was 21. The data were collected by using oral test especially speech test. The researcher asked students to perform their speech in front of the class orally. The researcher only measured the ability of the second grade students’ speech ability by considering five components of speaking. In analysing the data, the researcher did several steps. Firstly, she presented the raw score of each sample, calculated average score (M), classified the students who got high to low ability, and counted the percentage of them.Based on the result of data analysis, it is indicated that the second grade students speech ability in general was high. It was proved by the evidence that 18 85.71%of them can perform a speech orally. There were 16 76.19% students who had been classified in high criteria in expressing ideas, 21 100% students who had been classified in high criteria in using appropriate vocabulary in delivering a speech, 17 80.96%, students who had been classified in high criteria in using correct grammar in delivering a speech, 14 66.67% students who had been classified in high criteria in pronouncing words in delivering a speech, 16 76.19% students who had been classified in high criteria in fluency in delivering a speech. Finally, based on the findings, the researcher concluded that the speech ability of the second  grade students was high. Relating to this conclusion, she suggested to English teachers to consider proportionally the five components of speaking. She suggested to provide more practices for those components of speaking.
