AN ANALYSIS OF THE FIRST YEAR STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN WRITING SIMPLE SENTENCES USING MODAL AUXILIARIES AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

The aim of this research was to describe the first year students’ ability in writing simple sentences using modal auxiliaries at English Department of Bung Hatta University. This research was designed by descriptive method. The population of this research was the first year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The total number of population was 31 students, and it consists of class: PING A. The researcher used convenience sampling technique to select the sample. The total number of sample members was 28 students who were available that time. To collect the data, the researcher used writing test. The researcher asked students to write simple sentences using modal auxiliaries. In analyzing the data, the researcher did the following steps. Firstly, she presented the score and she converted the score. Finally, she classified the students’ ability based on Bung Hatta University criterion. It was concluded that the first year students’ ability in writing simple sentences using modal auxiliaries at English Department of Bung Hatta University in general was very good. It was proved by the evidence that 75% of them could write simple sentences using modal auxiliaries to express ability (can/could), 42.85 % of them could write simple sentences using modal auxiliaries to express expectation (should/ought to), 46.42% of them could write simple sentences using modal auxiliaries to give advice (should/ought to), 42.85 % of them could write simple sentences using modal auxiliaries to express preferences (would like/would rather), 46.42% of them could write simple sentences using modal auxiliaries to express possibility (may/might).
