CORRELATION BETWEEN EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND MOTIVATION TOWARD SPEAKING ABILITY OF THE THIRD YEAR STUDENTS OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT AT BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY

Abstract

The type of this research was correlational study. This research was aimed to find out the correlation between students emotional intelligence and their motivation toward their speaking at the third year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University. The number of population members was 49 students. To choose the sample, the researcher used simple total sampling technique, however there a number of samples were eliminated because of exclusion criteria, and the sample of this research was 36 students. The researcher used three types of instruments to collect the data; 2 kinds of questionnaires, and a speaking test.  Having analyzing the data, the researcher found that the value of coefficient correlation between students‟ emotional intelligence and their speaking ability was 0.547 and r-table was 0.39 (α 0.05 and df = n-2 (34)). The coefficient correlation between students‟ motivation and their speaking ability was 0.490 and r-table 0.361 (α 0.05 and df=n-2 (34)). The coefficient correlation between students‟ emotional intelligence, motivation and speaking ability was 0.567 and f-counted was 7.802 and value of f=table was 3.28 (α 0.05 and df= n-k-1 (33). The correlation among the three variables, emotional intelligence, motivation and speaking ability, were significant. Based on this study it is suggested that Lecturers inform the students about emotional intelligence and motivation on learning speaking. It is hope the lecturer can manage their emotional intelligence and motivate them with interesting speaking English activities in class room. Next, the students are suggested to be more aware of the importance of emotional intelligence and motivation in learning English as Foreign Language. They must be in peak emotional state before learning, engage their physiology, and eliminate their negative belief toward English. And also to do more exercises of speaking to improve their speaking ability.
