AN ANALYSIS OF THE SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO WRITE GREETING CARD AT SMP NEGERI 16 PADANG

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the seventh grade students’ ability in writing greeting card at SMP Negeri 16 Padang.The population of this research was grade students at SMP Negeri 16 Padang. The number of population of this research was 272 students (8 classes) . The researcher took one class as the sample. The instrument of this research was writing test. It was found that the correlation reability index of the test was 0,53. It means that test was reliable; so it can be used as instrument to collect the data of this research. From the result of the study, the researcher found that the ability of the first grade students of SMP N 16 Padang in writing greeting card  was moderate; it was supported by the data that 79,81% students had moderate ability. In specific the students’ ability in writing generic structure was moderate; it was supported by the data that 97,06% students had moderate ability. The students’ ability in using language feature was moderate; it was supported by the data that 91,89% students had moderate ability. The students’ ability in using vocabulary was moderate; it was supported by the data that 85,29% students had moderate ability. The students’ ability in applying mechanic was moderate; it was supported by the data that 88,29% students had moderate ability. Based on the result, the teachers are suggested to improve the ability of students into very high ability. The students are expected to increase their attention to language features, vocabulary and mechanics of greeting card because the result of the study showed that the students’ ability was moderate. The researcher suggests to the next researcher to do the research on writing  greeting card from different aspect such as the factors that make students’ ability was moderate.
