AN ANALYSIS OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO WRITE SIMPLE SENTENCES USING DEGREE OF COMPARISON OF ADJECTIVE AT SMP N 1 PADANG SAGO

Abstract

This research was to describe students` ability to write simple sentences using comparative and superlative degree of adjective at SMP N 1 Padang Sago. Population of this research was the eighth grade students’ at SMP N 1 Padang Sago. The total sample sizes were 23 students. The sample chosen was class VIII.3 and they were chosen by convenience sampling technique, they are all only 20 students as the sample. Data were collected through writing test. To make the test reliable, the researcher used inter-rater technique. It means that there were two scorers to check students answer sheets. It was found that the coefficient correlation was 0.80. It means that the test was reliable. The result of this research showed that the students’ ability to write degree of comparison of adjective at SMP N 1 Padang Sago in general was low. It was proved by the general finding that 0% students (0 student) had high ability and 100% students (20 students) had low ability to write simple sentences using degree of comparison of adjective. Students’ ability to write comparative degree with one syllable was moderate, it was proved by 50% students (10 students) had high ability and 50% students (10 students) had low ability. Students’ ability to write simple sentences using comparative degree of adjective with more than one syllable was low, it was proved by 40% students (8 students) had high ability and 60% students (12 students) had low ability. Students’ ability to write simple sentences using superlative degree of adjective with one syllable was low, it was proved by 5% students (1 student) had high ability and 95% students (19 students) had low ability. Students’ ability to write simple sentences using superlative degree of adjective more than one syllable was low, it was proved by 0% students (0 student) had high ability and 100% students (20 students) had low ability.
