An Analysis of Students’ Ability to Comprehend Advertisement by Using Scanning at the Third Year Students’ of English Department of Bung Hatta University

Abstrak

Scanning is looking for supporting points and details, provide in body paragraphs (Othman, 2006:5). In other words, finding elaborations or sentences includes detailed and spesific information that support an important point or a topic sentences in a body paragraph. Beare (2010:3) supports Othmant’s idea. He defines scanning is used to find a particular piece of information. He adds when the students scanning the text or materials, the students can run their eyes over the text looking for the spesific piece of information the students need. Relating to this, the researcher conducted this study on purpose of  students’ ability to comprehend advertisement by using scanning.

            The population of this research was the third year students of the English Department of Bung Hatta University. The number of the population members was 45 students, class A consist of 25 students and class B consist of 20 students. The data of this reasearch collected through reading test.  The test was essay question consisting of 20 items and divided into 4 groups and each group consists of 5 items. The reliability index of the test was 0.98 (Appendix 4). It means that the instrument were very high reliable.

            The result of this research shown in general, the ability of the third year students of the English Department of Bung Hatta University to comprhend advertisement by using scanning was very good, supported by the fact that there were 39 students (86.6%) who got very good ability. The students ability in determining place by using scanning categorized as very good, there were 41 students (91.2%) who got very good ability. In determining product or service categorized as good because there were  24 students (55.6%) who got good ability. The students ability in determining contact person by using scanning categorized as very good, there were 43 students (95.6%) who got very good ability. In determining time, the students ability categorized as very good because there were 28 students (62.3%) who got very good ability.

In line with the findings of this study as discussed above, it can be concluded that the third year students’ ability in comprehend advertisement by using scanning was very good ability. Dealing with such conclusion, it is suggested to the english teacher to are expected to give more explanation and exercises to improve students’ ability in comprehend another text by using scanning, because their ability in comprehend advertisement was very good.
