An Analysis of the Third Year Students’ Ability in Writing Procedure Text Using Silent Video at English Department of Bung Hatta University
Abstrak
Writing is one of the important ways that can be used by human beings to do communication one to another. By writing skill, someone can express her ideas, imagination, thoughts, feelings and even her experiences into written form. Procedure text is a text that is designed to describe how something is achieved through a sequence of action or steps. In teaching learning process, the teacher sometimes needs some media to improve students’ ability. One of media that can be used to teach writing is silent video. Purpose of this research was to analyze the students’ writing ability at English Department of Bung Hatta University. Especially, it aimed at describing the students’ ability in writing procedure text using silent video.
The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research was the third year student at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The total sample members were 32 students, they were chosen by total sampling technique. The data were collected through writing test. To make the test reliable the researcher used inter-rater technique. It means that there were two scorers to check the students writing sheet. The correlation coefficient of two scorers was 0.91. It means that the test was very high reliable.
The result of this research showed that the students’ ability to write a procedure text using silent video was moderate. It was provide by finding that 75% students had moderate ability. The students’ ability to write materials of procedure text using silent video was moderate. It was provide by finding that 91% students had moderate ability. students’ ability to write steps of procedure text using silent video was moderate. It was provide by finding that 81% students had moderate ability. The students’ ability in using correct grammar was Low. It was provide by finding that 41% students had low ability. The students’ ability in using appropriate word (vocabulary) was moderate. It was provide by finding that 90% students had moderate ability. The students’ ability in using correct mechanics was moderate. It was provide by finding that 66% students had moderate ability.
In line with the findings of this study as discussed above, it can be concluded that writing ability of the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University was moderate. So, it is suggested to the lecturer to keep or improve their ability in writing into high ability by giving some more practice in writing and giving more exercises in grammar because the students’ ability in grammar is low.
