Abstrak

The ability of mathematical communication is one of the aspects that need to be developed in the learning of mathematics. Less optimal students' mathematical communication ability is caused because students are not used to writing what is known and asked from a given problem and lack of students understanding about mathematical concepts and symbols, so that students are often mistaken when solving mathematic problems. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the students' mathematical communication skills in solving mathematical problems based on the assimilation and accommodation framework.

The purposes of this research are: to identify students'mathematical communication ability in solving mathematical problemsand to describe students' mathematic communication based in solving mathematical problems at each level of written mathematical communication skill based on assimilation and accommodation framework. This research method is qualitative research. The subjects were 6 students in grade VII.3 SMP Negeri 40 Padang consisting of 2 students in each level ofwrittenmathematical communication ability. The instruments of data collection are written test and interview.

Based on the result of data analysis, find out two conclutions:written mathematical communication ability of students in solving the mathematical problem is quite good with the average score of 29.64 from the ideal score of 48 and there are three of students' schemas when they done assimilation and accomodation process: (1) pseudo schema, (2) non-macthing schema, and (3) imitation schema.

Based on conclusions, it is recommended that teachers pay more attention to students' schema by ensuring that students already understand the concept of mathematics well, because the students' schema greatly affects students' written mathematical communication abilities.

Keywords: mathematical communication, problem solving, assimilation, accommodation.
