Abstrak

The objective of this research is to describe the politeness in using Minangkabau Language on directive verbal communication of children from highly educated families towards the people ofNagari of Ampalu, SuteraDistrict, Pesisir Selatan Regency. The theory used in this study is the one proposed by Leech (in Chaer,2010) onthe theory of practicingpolitenessin language which consists of six maxims.

The type of the research was qualitative research using descriptive method. The data werecollected from informants consisting of four families who are categorized as highly educated. Data were collected in form of utterances which wereused bychildren of highly educated family inthe community in the aspect of directive speech actsin Nagari of Ampalu, SuteraDistrict, Pesisir Selatan Regency.

The result of this research is that there are five forms of directive speechacts of children from highly educated families in Nagari of Ampalu, SuteraDistrict, Pesisir Selatan Regency, which includesspeech actsof suggesting, requesting, ordering, giving an advice,and of confronting. In analyzing the level of politeness, the author used the principle of politeness according to Chaer (2010:56-62) which consists of six maxims, among which aretact, generosity,approbation, modesty, agreement, and sympathy. The study found that the directive speech actsthat children from highly educated families usedtowards their community in Nagari of Ampalu, SuteraDistrict, Pesisir Selatan Regency are categorized into non polite and polite speech acts. Based on the five forms ofspeech acts observed in the children, it was found that 13 speech acts dataare in the form of  suggesting, 6 speech acts dataare in the form of requesting, 4 data are in the form of ordering, 8 data are in the form ofgiving an advice, and 8 data are in the form of confronting.The cause of these phenomeone isdue to lack of knowledge and comprehension taught by theirown family.

Thus, it can be concluded that that compared to children of non-highly educated families,politeness in the use of Minangkabau language in children from highly educated familiesin their community, especially in community of Nagari  of Ampalu,the highly educated families have a very different type ofpoliteness of speech acts.The author suggests that teachersuse this finding as a reference in teaching politeness in speech acts as a part of teaching materials in learning process in school, and to broaden the students’ knowledgeon the importance of education.
