The study aimed to describe the ability to write a poetry using experiential techniques of Class VIII-1 students of SMPN 2 Lengayang of Pesisir Selatan Regency in terms of the ability in usung themes, dictions, and content compatibility of the poetry with experience. The theories used to analyze the poetry were the theories exppressed by Waluyo (2005), and Pradopo (2005).

The type of the study was qualitative with a descriptive method. The subjects of the study were Class VIII-1 studens of SMPN 2 Lengayang of Pesisir Selatan Regency. The data of the study were the poetries written by the students based on experiential techniques. The instruments used in the study were the writer and the data acquired from the result of poetries written by students based on the accuracy in the use of themes, dictions, and content compatibilty.

Based on the result and the data analysis of the study, the students’ average score 86,4 was acquired from the result of the ability to write a poetry using experiential techniques. The score was obtained from three aspects which were the themes, the dictions, and the content compatibility. The themes found in the students’ poetries were about blessed forest, missing family, frindship, dissapointment, past memories, missing lovers, memories, cheating lovers, cheating best friends, parents’ love, loneliness, nature’s beauty, and trips. The dictions in the students’ choice of words were appropriate, althought the words used in the poetries had more denotative meaning than connotative. Students used more everyday language than implied language. The content compatibility of the poetries written by the students was much in line with their  experiences.

Based on the result of the study, it could be concluded that the ability to write a poetry using experiental technicues of Class VIII-1 students of SMPN 2 Lengayang of Pesisir Selatan Regency was in the category of good. This explained that the students were capable in writing poetries using experiential techniques well.
