Gender Discrimination in the Short Story Collection HasratMembunuh Written by Yusrizal KW from the Perspective of Sara Mills
Abstrak
Injustice and bad descriptions of women and men are the quite prominent elements in the short story collection Hasrat Membunuh by Yusrizal KW. Based on these, the writer was motivated to trace the forms of gender injustice that were portrayed through conflicts in the short story collection to provide an interpretation of issues related to gender discrimination in it. The study aimed to describe gender discrimination on the characters in the Short Story Collection Hasrat Membunuh by Yusrizal KW using the perspective of Sara Mills.
The theories used as references in the study were the elements of a short story, the gender discrimination, and the perspective of Sara Mills. According to Nurgiyantoro (2010) , the elements of a short story are the theme, the setting, the characterization, the storyline, and the perspective. According to Fakih (2013), gender discriminations among others are marginalization, subordination, stereotypical point of view, violence and double encumbrances. According to Sara Mills (Eriyanto, 2009), the meaning of the text can be seen from the position of subject, object, and readers
The type of the study was qualitative with a descriptive method. The data of the study were words which can be formulated as gender discrimination covering marginalization, subordination, stereotypical point of view, violence and double encumbrances. The data resource of the study was the short story collection Hasrat Membunuh written by Yusrizal KW. The data collecting techniques were conducted through: (1) reading all of the short stories, (2) identifying the data relating to gender discrimination on the characters, (3) classifying issues of gender discrimination found based on the theory. The data analysis was conducted through stages which were: (1) selecting and classifying the data about gender discrimination on the characters, (2) outlining the gender discrimination data on the characters, (3) interpreting words between the subject, the object, and the readers, and (4) concluding the result of the study.
Based on the result of the study and the discussion were found as follow: First, the subject position on the characters in the short story collection Hasrat Membunuh about gender discrimination from the perspective of Sara Mills was found as many as 13 data. Gender discriminations experienced were in the forms of marginalization, violence and double encumbrances. Second, the object position on the characters in the short story collection Hasrat Membunuh about gender discrimination from the perspective of Sara Mills was found as many as 56 data. Gender discriminations experienced were in the forms of marginalization, subordination, stereotypical point of view, violence and double encumbrances. Third, the readers’ position obtained from the position of the subject and the object that had gender discrimination on the characters of the short story collection Hasrat Membunuh from the perspective of Sara Mills was found as many as 69 data. The alignment of readers to characters based on mediation factors (siding with the character) and cultural factors (siding with the value orientation) were in accordance with the context of the events’ situation found in the short story collection Hasrat Membunuh by Yusrizal KW.
