Women's Strategy in Facing Gender Discrimination in the Novel Cinta 2 Kodi Written by Asma Nadia: a study of Literature Feminism

Abstrak

This study was motivated by gender discrimination, including in  economic field experienced by women in families and in society. This issue is often raised by authors as a theme or issue in their literary works. The study aimed to describe the theme, the storyline, the setting, the characterizations, and the women’s strategy in facing gender discrimination in the Novel Cinta 2 Kodi  by Asma Nadia.In the study were applied two theories, namely the theory of a novel’s structure and the theory of women’s strategy in facing gender descrimination. Nurgiyantoro (2010) states that the intrinsic structures of a novel among others consist of the theme, the characterization, the setting, and the storyline. Ollen Burger and Moore (2002) propose that there are three strategies that women have in facing gender descrimination, namely (1) working hard and being independent, (2) thinking highly intellectual, and (3) beinga socialist.The type of the study was qualitative with a descriptive method. The data of the study were in the forms of words, sentences, and expressions relating to women’s strategy in facing gender discrimination in the novel Cinta 2 Kodi by Asma Nadia. The data collecting techniques used were: (1) reading the resource  which was the main point, (2) marking parts of  the intrinsic elements and post-structuralist feminism, (3) recording the data in accordance with the intrinsic elements and post-structuralist feminism, and (4) entering the data into the table of intrinsic elements and women’s strategy in facing gender discrimination. The data were analyzed through:  (1) selecting and classifying the data, (2) describing the study data, (3) analyzing the data, and (4) concluding the result of the data analysis. Based on the data analysis and the discussion were found the results of the study as follow:  First, the intrinsic elements of the novel Cinta 2 Kodi, (1) the theme was a struggle of women in dealing with economical problems,  (2) The main characters of the novel were Aryani and Kartika, (3) The time setting was year, morning, noon, and evening, the place setting was at home, in the office, on a public transportation, and on the train, while the atmosphere setting was tense, sad and anxious, (4) the storyline of the novel was a mixed plot. Second, the women’s strategies in facing gender discrimination were (1) working hard and being independent, namely when Aryani and Kartika worked hard and were independent in dealing with economical problems, (2) thinking highly intellectual, such as when Aryani and Kartika  had intelligent mindsets in finding solutions to the economic problems they were facing, (3) Being social, namely when Kartika and Aryani were social and reliable in the community. Therefore, a woman must be able to work hard, be independent, and be smart so that she does not depend on men.
