An Analysis of The First Year Students’ Difficulties in Speaking at English at English Department of Bung Hatta University

Abstrak

Speaking is one of the four basic skills in learning foreign language besides listening, reading, and writing. Speaking is oral communication in using words or the ability to converse or to express of ideas fluently between speaker and listener. In this globalization era, to be a part of that people must be able to communicate well. Important to master speaking by learning the language in the real life.

The population of this research was the first year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University. The total sample members were 26 students. They were choosen by using total sampling technique. The data were collected through speaking test. To make the test reliable, the researcher used inter-rater method. It means that there were two scorers to check the students’ speaking recording. The correlation coefficients of two scores was 0.91. It means that the test was reliable.

The result of this research showed that in general the students had no difficulty in speaking at English Department of Bung Hatta University. It was proved by the finding that there were 100% students had no difficulty, the specifically the result of the result of the research showed that the students had no difficulty in expressing idea (content) in speaking, it was proved by finding that 88 % students had no difficulty. The students had difficulty in using grammar in speaking. It was proved by finding that 69% students who had no difficulty. The students had no difficulty in pronunciation in speaking. It was proved by the finding that 100% students had no difficulty. The students had no difficulty in choosing vocabulary in speaking. It  was no difficulty. It was proved by finding that 100% students had no difficulty. The students had no difficulty in fluency in speaking. It was proved by finding that 96% students had no difficulty.

Based on the result of this research, it can be concluded that the first year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University had no difficulty in speaking.
