The Use of Pictures in Teaching Degree of Comparison

Abstrak

The degree of comparison is the modification of adjectives and adverbs to indicate that something or someone has relatively equal, greater, or lesser degree of some quality or quantity. The purpose of this research is to know the achievement of teaching degrees of comparison using pictures. If there is any significant differences between students’ achievement (pre-test and post-test) in learning degrees of comparison using picture, there is the effect of the use of pictures in teaching degree of comparison at the Second Year Students of SMP Negeri 4 Lubuk Alung.

This researcher used pre-experiment, and design “one group pre-test post-test”. The total sample members were 31 students, they were chosen by using purposive sampling. The independent variable was using picture, and dependent was the result of learning / achievement.

The result of data analysis showed the students had high score from the calculation of pre-test, and post-test. The highest score obtained by student was 80, and the lowest score was 20 (see Table 4.1). They got under the minimum Criteria of Completeness (KKM) that has been determined (68). In Pre-Test, 10 students got scores above KKM (32,26 %), and 21 students got under KKM (67,74%) while the average Pre-Test was 50,58. In Post-Test, the average score was 72,77 with the highest score 96 and the lowest score of 56. The students got below KKM were 8 (25,81%). While there were 23 students getting score above KKM (74,19%). Based on the test calculated, it was obtained T-Count (4,70) was higher than T-Table (1,69) with significant level of 0,5, and degree of freedom (df) N-1. It means that there was significant difference between students’ achievement (pre-test and post-test) in learning degrees of comparison using picture.

In line with the findings of this research as discussed above, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of the using pictures at the Second Year Students of SMP Negeri 4 Lubuk Alung. So, it is suggested to the teachers to use visual aids, such as pictures as an alternative way to convey the material to help the students in improving in learning English.
