Abstrak

Writing becomes a way to communicate with other people. Writing is one of communication tool among people and people can share their ideas by taking it into written product so that others can read it (Berliana et. al, 2013:333). Relating to this, the researcher conducted this research on purpose to increase students ability on writing narrative paragraph using short stories.

This research was aimed to see the process of increasing the students‘ writing skill in narrative paragraph at class X of SMAN 4 Pariaman using short stories. It means that this study was focused on increasing the students’ writing skill in narrative paragraph using short stories at class X of SMAN 4 Pariaman. The subject of this research was class X IPA4 (natural science class) of SMAN 4 Pariaman that consisted of 32 students. The method used in this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR). This research was conducted following Kemmis with the following procedures of action research: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The research was carried out in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of two meetings. The instruments were observation, documentation, and tests (test 1 and test 2).

The results in this research indicated that there was improvement of the students‘ skill on writing narrative paragraph. Most of the students gradually gained good scores at the end of the cycle. The score of Minimum Mastery Criterion or Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal (KKM) of English lesson was 73.00. In the test 1, there were 9 or 28.12% students who passed the KKM and the mean score of test 1 was 55.18. Next, in doing the test 2, the researcher gave the same stories from the cycle one. The result of test 2 in the second cycle showed that there were 28 students or 87.5% who passed the KKM in which their mean score derived 79.43. Thus there was improvement by 59.38 % from the cycle 1 and cycle 2. The class condition during teaching learning process was quite good.

Based on the results of this research, it can be concluded that short stories can increase the students’ ability on writing narrative paragraph. The last, the students are suggested to learn more about on writing paragraph and to do more exercises to increase their ability.
