Self Actualization Process of The Main Characters of Rembulan Tenggelam di Wajahmu and Tentang Kamu Novels By Tere Liye : A Literal Psychology Review

Abstrak

Through a novel, the author describes humans in more detail as social beings who require recognition for their positions in the society. Self-actualization is the highest requirement of the hierarchy of human needs which consist of (1) physiological needs, (2) safety needs, (3) love and belonging needs, (4) self-esteem, and (5) self-actualization. The purpose of this research is to describe the self-actualization process of the main characters of Rembulan Tenggelam di Wajahmu and Tentang Kamu novels By Tere Liye

This research used two theories namely novel intrinsic elements and hierarchy of needs. Nurgiyantoro (2010) described that novel structure consists of intrinsic elements such as (1) theme, (2) background, (3) characterization, (4) plot, (5) language style and (6) moral message. Alwisol (2007) and Maslow (in Mindrop, 2013) stated that the hierarchy of human needs consists of (1) physiological needs, (2) safety needs, (3) love and belonging needs, (4) self-esteem, and (5) self-actualization.

The method used was descriptive qualitative. Data sources were Rembulan Tenggelam di Wajahmu and Tentang kamu Novels by Tere Liye. Data collection techniques were read and record. The data were analyzed by (1) describing the marked data according to hierarchy of needs by Maslow, (2) interpreting the self-actualization process seen from hierarchy of needs, (3) drawing conclusions.

The results of the research show, firstly, Rehan in Rembulan Tenggelam di Wajahmu novel was able to fulfill the hierarchy of needs through the stages of needs such as (1) safety needs, (2) physiological needs, (3) self-esteem, (4) love and belonging needs, (5) self actualization. This was influenced by the background of Rehan's life living in an orphanage. Secondly, Sri Ningsih in Tentang kamu novel was able to fulfill the hierarchy of needs through the stages of needs such as (1) love and belonging needs, (2) physiological needs, (3) safety needs, (4) self-esteem, (5) self-actualization. This was influenced by the background of Sri's life who was raised in a family and Islamic school. Thirdly, the tendency of similarities and differences in the process of self actualization are (1) both main characters fulfilled physiological needs at the second level and (2) both characters were able to achieve actualization according to their respective potentials, while the difference are that Rehan actualized himself as property businessman while Sri Ningsih actualized himself as a soap factory owner and traditional dance teacher. Therefore, it is concluded that the two main characters of these novel had a tendency of similarities and differences in the achievement of self-actualization which was reflected in characterization, plot, and background.
