The Form of Malay Greeting ofKubu Ethnic Group in Mentawak Village, Nalo Tantan District, Merangin Regency, Jambi Province

Abstrak

Kubu Malay language is an old Malay language which does not develop along the times and is not understood by wider community. In Kubu Malay language, there are greetings which have their uniqueness. This research aims to describe: (1) the form of the core kinship greeting and (2) the form of kinship greetingextended by the Kubu ethnic group.

            In this research, several theoretical bases were used. Opinions ofChaer and Agustina (2014) stated that the definition of sociolinguistics is an interdisciplinary field of study that studies language in relation to the use of that language in society, Syafyahya (2006) stated that the kinship greeting consists of two types: core kinship greeting and extended familial greeting, and Reniwati and Nadra (2009) stated about dialectology regarding informants who will provide the research data.

            This research used qualitative approach and descriptive method. Data collection was conducted by: (1) approaching pontential informants, (2) determining the informants according to the criteria of the object of the study, (3) distributing questionnaires in the form of questions about the form of the core kinship greeting and extended familial greeting to be filled out,(4) help fill out questionnsires for those who connot write, and (5) record the answers of informants with Vivo brand phones for additional information about the words of the Kubu tribe. This was done for additional information about data concerning on greeting of the Kubu ethnic group. Data analysis techniques in this study were as follows: (1) selecting the data that have been collected in accordance with the aspects studied, (2) classifying the collected data based on the aspects studied, and (3) describing the research data from questionnaires based on research objectives, (4) drawing conclusions from the results of data analysis.

            The results of this study inform that there are 2 forms of greeting words, first the core kinship word form is found in 8 words with 16 greetings, the two extended kinship words are found in 40 words with 108 greetings

            The conclusion of this research is that there are 124 variations of kinship greeting. The core kinship greetings that tend to be used in everyday life are bepakku, indukku, lakiku, biniku and the extended kinship greetings that tend to be used in everyday life are puyang, nenek,mamok, lahubanon, rentuha, kakokipo, adikipoandcucung.
