Abstrak

The number of students in class VII of SMP 16 Padang made a mistake when solving on mathematics problems, which is the background of this research. In addition, the MID value of the odd semester of students is still much below the KKM value. For this reason, it is necessary to analysis errors in solving mathematical problems.

This type of research was a descriptive research, grade VII students of SMP 16 Padang become the population and the sample is students of class VII 8 including 30 students. The research instrument was in the form of a description test and an interview guide sheet for several students in class VII 8.

The results showed the number of errors made by students with a sample of 25 students was the number of concept errors of 39.1%, a principle error of 38.18%, and an error, algorithm of 22.72%. Factors that caused students to made mistakes Internal factors were errors in understanding the problem, errors in not remembering the prerequisite material, errors in not understanding the symbols and symbols contained in the algebra operation, errors in the problem solving steps, not knowing principle formula used to answer questions. The external factors such as: a less conducive classroom atmosphere (sometimes noisy and there are some students who talk to their peers when the teacher explains) during learning. Carelessness factors such as: hurry in working on the problem, do not check the results that have been done, the lack of intelligence students use the time in solving alajabar problems.

From the results of the there is suggested that students do more questions related to the material being taught and more often ask the teacher if there are still things that are not understood. In addition, the teacher should remind the material that has been taught, to start new related material.

Key Word: Students’ error, Learning mathematics.
