An Analysis of the Second Year Students’ Ability to Comprehend Procedure Text at SMA N 1 Bonjol.

Abstrak

In learning English, students have to learn four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. All of those skills are intergrated each other. In fact, reading is the skill that has closely relationship with the other skills of English. It can support speaking in term of understanding message from the other speaker. Then, by reading the students can identify kinds of text that are also taught in writing. In listening, it is quite the same as the receptive skill that works to understand the message being conveyed.

 

This research was aimed to describe the second year students’ ability to comprehend procedure text. The design of this research was descriptive. The members of population of this research were 242. The researcher used stratified cluster random sampling in taking the sample. The number of sample was 56 students. In collecting the data the researcher used reading test. The reliability index was 0.89 or very high correlation (see Appendix 10).

 

The researcher found that in general the second year students’ ability to comprehend procedure text was low. It was indicated by the fact that 21 (37%) students had low ability (see Appendix 14). In more specific, the researcher found their ability to comprehend the goal of procedure text was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 51(91%) students had moderate ability to comprehend the goal (see Appendix 15). It was also found that their ability to comprehend material was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 26( 46%) students had moderate ability to comprehend the material (see Appendix 16). Last, this research also found that their ability to comprehend the step was moderate. It was proved by the fact that 24(43%) students had moderate ability to comprehend the step (see Appendix 17).

 

Based on the findings, a simple conclusion could be drawn that the ability of the second year students’ ability to comprehend procedure text at SMA N 1Bonjol was low. The researcher  suggests to the teachers at SMA N 1 Bonjol to give more explanations and more exercises about procedure text. For the students, they are suggested to learn more about procedure text, and to do more exercises about comprehending procedure text.
