The Correlation between Students’ Motivation and Reading Interest toward Their Reading Comprehension in Understanding Narrative Text of Third Year Students at English Department of Bung Hatta University

Abstrak

Reading is one of four basic languages skill that should be mastered by someone who learns a language. According to Graves (2011) Reading is a complex interaction between text, the reader and the purpose for reading, which are shaped by the reader’s prior knowledge and experiences, the readers’ knowledge about reading and writing g language and the readers’ language community which is cult.

The population of this research is the third year students at english department of Bung Hatta University. The total sample members were 52 students, and they were chosen by using total sampling technique. The mothod used in this study was correlation method. In collecting data, the researcher used questionnaire for students motivation, questionnaire for reading interest, and reading test for reading comprehension of narrative text.

The result of data analysis showed that, the researcher found that students motivation  and reading interest was classified as high, ands their reading comprehension of narrative text was also high. In addition, she found that the value of coefficient correlation between students motivation and reading comprehension of narrative text was 0,98 and r-counted bigger than r-table (0.98>0,349). It means there is significant correlation, between reading interest and readin g comprehension of narrative text was 0,98 with r-counted bigger than r-table  (0.98>0,349). It means there is significant correlation. Between students motivation and reading interest was 0,93 with r-counted bigger than r-table  (0.93>0,349). It means there is significant correlation. Therefore, the relationship between three variables was 0,99 with f-counted bigger than f-table  (0.99>0,349). It means there is significant correlation.

In conclusion, the result of this study showed that the correlation between students motivation and their reading interest toward their reading comprehension in understanding narrative text of third year students at english department of Bung Hatta University was significant correlation.
