Abstrak

The learning process that still involves a lot of the teacher's role, as well as group discussions that have not gone well, makes students passive in understanding the material and completing the exercise of the given questions. In the learning process, the teacher presents the material and provides examples of problems with the steps to solve them. So, in completing the practice questions students are accustomed to imitating the completion process exemplified by the teacher. This causes the ability of students to solve practice questions that need good understanding are still low. To overcome these problems, the researchers applied the rotating trio exchange learning strategy.

Method of research conducted is experimental research. The population  is grade VIII of  students at SMPN 34 Padang in the school year 2017/2018. For the sample, 2 classes have the same average. Selected Class VIII.2 becomes an experimental class and class VIII.1 becomes a control class.

The results of the final test calculation from the sample class indicate that the data is normally distributed and homogeneous. To test the hypothesis, use the t-test formula. After processing the data obtained t(count) = 2.46 and                   t (0.95; 50) = 1.675 with the level α = 0.05 so that tcount> t (0.95; 50)  then the research hypothesis is accepted. Thus it was concluded that students mathematical problem-solving abilities who learned to implement the Rotating Trio Learning Learning Strategy were better than students mathematical problem-solving abilities whose learning applied conventional learning in grade VIII of  students at SMPN 34 Padang.

Based on the results of the research that has been done, the researcher suggests that the rotating trio exchange learning strategy can be applied by the mathematics teacher as one of the efforts to make students mathematical problem-solving skills better.
