An Analysis of the Students’ Mathematical Connection Ability in Class VIII of State Junior High School 12 Padang on Geometric Figures
Abstrak
The background of this research was the students has not been able to understand the concepts and procedures to solve the questions well. The students have not been able to apply the topics were learned and were not able to see relevenary previous topics. Students were also able to develop the formula that they understand in the different form. As the result, students could not solve the questions especially in real world problems. It was indicated that the students less successful in following mathematics learning process in the class, because the students’ mathematical connection ability was still low.
This type of research is descriptive research. The population of this research were all of the students at class VIII Junior High School 12 Padang in academic year 2017/2018, while the sample of this research was the students at class VIII.3. Group samples were taken by using purposive sampling technique based on the by discussion between with vorl teachers. The instruments that used in this research included the question tests of the Mathematical connection ability and interview.
This research showed that the students’ mathematical connection ability has been classified as high enough. It can be seen by the number of students who are able to mastery 5 from 6 indicators in mathematical connection. However, the writer did not find any students who is able to reach the maximum value that is 100. Researcher also identify the students answer, to look at the main causes of the students falls in solving the mathematical connection. The students have not been able to understand the questions well, less conscientious in solving the question test, ignored some steps/ procedures in solving the questions test, and not included the units structurally.
From this results, the researcher suggested that during the learning process, teachers should carry out of purposeful and meaningful learning so that students’ mathematical connection ability will be more increasing.
